Why is my Nikon DSLR suddenly producing mostly white photos?

My Nikon D50 has started taking mostly white/overexposed photos. Occasionally part of the image is visible, and sometimes it works normally for a while before the problem returns. I tried multiple exposure modes (M, P, A, Auto, Landscape) and also tested two different lenses, but the issue remains.

One odd detail: in burst mode using Sports, the first frame may be white, but the following shots can come out normal.

What camera fault would cause this kind of intermittent white frame?

It looks like the shutter is not functioning correctly. If the shutter gets stuck at some point while it is closing, you'll get some kind of image in the area of the sensor where the shutter was working properly, then white for the rest, with light spilling over into the darker area. That's exactly what your image looks like.

You need to send your Nikon in for repair, either to Nikon or a place that can service Nikons.

The most likely cause is a failing shutter mechanism.

If the shutter is sticking or not closing/opening correctly, too much light reaches the sensor, which gives you washed-out or fully white frames. When only part of the shutter movement is working properly, you can get a partial image with the rest blown out—matching the symptoms you described.

Because it happens with different lenses and in different exposure modes, it’s very unlikely to be a settings issue. The burst-mode behavior also fits an intermittent mechanical shutter fault.

This is a repair issue, not a user mistake. The camera should be serviced by Nikon or a repair shop that works on Nikon DSLRs.
