Why is my Nikon D7200 delaying before taking a photo?

My Nikon D7200 seems to pause before taking a picture. It feels like the shutter opens, waits about a second, then closes and records the image. This happens even with manual focus, and in Live View I see about a 2-second delay. I’ve already tried fast shutter speeds, Sports mode, and turning RAW off. What camera setting could cause this kind of delay?

Do you have "Exposure Delay Mode" set? It delays the shutter to allow vibrations to settle when on a tripod. Should be in the D4 (Shooting/Display) menu.
See The Manual page 280.

This is most likely caused by Exposure Delay Mode being enabled on the D7200. That setting intentionally adds a short delay between pressing the shutter and making the exposure so camera vibrations can settle, which is useful on a tripod but makes normal shooting feel slow.
Check the camera’s menu and turn Exposure Delay Mode off. On the D7200, it’s listed in the custom settings/shooting-related menu (the manual references it as a feature for reducing vibration).
A delay in Live View can also be normal if a self-timer or similar delay setting is active, but based on your description the main thing to check first is Exposure Delay Mode.
Changing RAW/JPEG, shutter speed, or focus mode would not remove this kind of built-in release delay.
