Why is my Nikon D600 stuck at 1/200 second shutter speed without a flash?

My Nikon D600 will not let me set a shutter speed faster than 1/200 second, even though I am not using an external flash. What camera setting or hardware issue could cause this, and what should I check?

Is the pop-up flash down securely? I would try putting it up and then back down again. The only other thing I can think of is that the camera is setting the SS and you are not directly in control of it... i.e. aperture priority with auto ISO or some program mode.

1/200 second is around the D600’s flash sync limit, so the camera may think a flash is active even if you are not intentionally using one.

Things to check:

  • Make sure the pop-up flash is fully closed and latched. Try raising it and closing it again.
  • Check whether the camera is in a mode where it controls shutter speed for you, such as a program or priority mode. In those modes, you may not have full direct control.
  • If nothing is attached but the limit remains, the hot shoe flash-detect switch may be stuck, making the camera behave as if a flash is mounted.

If the issue happens in full manual exposure mode with no flash attached and the pop-up flash firmly down, a stuck flash-detection switch is a likely cause and may need inspection or service.
