Why is my Fujifilm X camera stuck in manual focus?

My Fujifilm X-series camera appears to be locked in manual focus even though the body focus switch is set to S. I’ve toggled the switch, removed and reattached the lens, and checked the contacts and menus. In the quick menu, MF is highlighted and can’t be changed. The lens doesn’t seem to have a normal AF/MF switch. Is this likely a fault, or is there another control I should check?

Don't panic! There actually is an autofocus switch on the lens itself. You may have glanced over this in the manual but not paid attention. On many Fujifilm X lenses, the entire focus ring can actually click forward or backwards. When it's back, a distance scale is exposed and the lens is in manual focus mode. When it's forward, autofocus. You must have moved it inadvertently. Push it back again and all will be well.

It may not be a fault. Some Fujifilm X prime lenses use a clutch-style focus ring instead of a separate AF/MF switch. If the focus ring has been pulled back, it exposes a distance scale and puts the lens into manual focus, which can make the camera show MF even if the body switch is set to S.
