Why is Live View disabled on my Nikon D300 with a lens that has an aperture ring?

On my Nikon D300, Live View works with my 24-85mm AF-G, but it will not start when I use my 300mm f/4 AF-S. Pressing the shutter does nothing. Is this normal, or is there a setting I need to change when using a lens with an aperture ring?

I think I may have your answer. On the D300 and D700, if you are using lenses that have an aperture ring LV is disabled unless a certain menu setting (f7 on a D300, f9 on a D700) is set the correct way ("Sub-command dial OK").

Your 300mm has an aperture ring; your 24-85mm does not.

Yes—this can be normal on the D300. If the lens has an aperture ring, Live View may be disabled unless the camera is set to allow aperture adjustment with the sub-command dial.

On the D300, check Custom Setting f7 and make sure it is set to "Sub-command dial" (or "Sub-command dial OK," depending on the wording in your manual/firmware). The issue happens because your 300mm f/4 has an aperture ring, while your 24-85mm AF-G does not.

So the likely fix is simply to change that menu setting. Once configured correctly, Live View should work with the 300mm as well.
