Why is darktable losing my edits when I leave an image or work with the history stack?

In darktable, edits on a JPEG are not being retained. When I leave the image and return to the photo list, the changes appear to be gone. I also tried working with the history stack, but my edits are discarded, and creating a style/template reports "can't create style out of unaltered image." Deleting the sidecar .xmp files did not help. What could cause darktable to behave like this?

I tried to delete the pictures also from the database and it still didn't help. @sebix was right when he commented that the basic modules are missing, they should be there.

In the end, I gave up. I deleted all darktable databases and installed the latest version. It solved the problem.

This sounds like a darktable installation or database problem rather than normal editing behavior. One community reply noted that some basic modules/history items were missing (such as color profile/orientation entries), which suggests the setup was not behaving normally. Another reply also pointed out that the button used in the video was for creating a style from the history stack, not compressing it; that error appears if darktable thinks the image is unchanged. In the reported case, deleting the darktable databases and reinstalling/updating to the latest version fixed the issue. So the most likely cause is a corrupted or broken darktable database/configuration, possibly combined with confusion over the history-stack controls. Back up anything important first, then try resetting/removing darktable’s database/config files and updating or reinstalling darktable.
