How can I create multiple independent edits of the same photo in darktable?

I want to make several different edits of one image in darktable without duplicating the original file on disk. Is there a way to create separate versions of the same photo so each one has its own edit history and sidecar/XMP file for later comparison?

You can check for Duplicate manager in Darktable. According to the text you can:
View and create multiple versions of the current image. Each version can be edited independently without affecting other versions – all versions use the same underlying image file, but the editing history of each version is stored in its own independent XMP sidecar file.

Yes. In darktable, use the Duplicate Manager to create multiple versions of the same image. Each duplicate points to the same original photo file, but each version can be edited independently.
That means you can try different looks or processing approaches without copying the image file itself. darktable stores each version’s edit history in its own separate XMP sidecar, so you can compare the alternatives later and keep the one you prefer.
