Why is Auto HDR greyed out on my Sony A55?

On a used Sony Alpha 55 with the 18-70mm kit lens, the Auto HDR option in the function menu is greyed out. I’ve tried Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual mode, but it stays unavailable. Is Auto HDR only available with certain settings, or is there another setting that disables it?

Have you tried it with image settings set to JPEG instead of RAW? The Auto HDR function is not selectable if you are saving raw images.
There are also other settings that will disable Auto HDR. They're listed on pages 108-9 of the α33/α55 Instruction Manual:

The most likely cause is your image quality setting. On the Sony A55, Auto HDR is disabled when the camera is set to record RAW. Switch image quality to JPEG, then check the menu again.
Auto HDR can also be unavailable with certain other settings combinations. The camera manual lists the combinations that disable it, so if JPEG doesn’t fix it, review the Auto HDR restrictions in the A33/A55 manual.
