Why doesn’t Live View show depth of field changes on a Canon 700D?

I’m using a Canon 700D with a Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro lens. In Live View, changing the aperture from f/2.8 to f/5 doesn’t seem to change the apparent depth of field on the screen, but the captured photo clearly shows more depth of field at the smaller aperture.

Is this normal behavior? Should Live View preview depth of field as I change aperture, or does the camera keep the lens wide open until the shot is taken? For macro work, it would be helpful to know how to preview the final depth of field before shooting.

The camera usually keeps the aperture open as wide as possible while framing the shot. It is only closed to the setting you dialed in when the picture is being taken. This allows for a brighter viewfinder and more of the auto focus points to be used.

As described in the manual of your camera on page 114, there's a dedicated button to stop down the aperture to the dialed in setting.

Yes, this is normal. The camera typically keeps the lens aperture wide open while you compose, including in Live View, and only stops it down to your selected f-stop when the photo is taken. This keeps the preview brighter and helps focusing.

If you want to preview the actual depth of field, use the camera’s depth-of-field preview control/button. On the 700D, the manual describes a dedicated control for stopping the lens down to the chosen aperture so you can see a more accurate preview before taking the shot.

So the behavior you’re seeing is expected, not a fault with the lens or camera.
