Why does the Nikon D5100 info display turn off after about 10 seconds?

On my Nikon D5100, Live View works normally when I use the screen as a viewfinder. But when the rear screen is showing the camera settings/info display, it turns off after roughly 10 seconds and I have to press the Info button to bring it back.
Is this controlled by a setting, or could there be something wrong with the camera?

You're looking for c2: Auto off Timers in the Custom Settings Menu. This is explained on page 160 of the Nikon D5100 Reference Manual — not to be confused with the abridged User's Manual, which leaves out most of the details.
It sounds like you are looking to change Auto meter-off, which Nikon describes as the time the "information display remain[s] on when no operations are performed". When set to normal, that goes off after 8 seconds. Changing it to long will give you a minute.

This is normal behavior, not a fault.
On the Nikon D5100, the rear settings/info screen is controlled by the Auto off timers setting in the Custom Settings Menu. The specific option you want is Auto meter-off, which determines how long the information display stays on when you don’t press any buttons.
With the timer set to Normal, the info display turns off after about 8–10 seconds. If you change it to Long, it will stay on for about a minute.
Look for: Custom Settings Menu > c2 Auto off timers > Auto meter-off
So if the screen only shuts off when showing settings, but works fine in Live View, your camera is most likely working as designed.
