Why does my Nikon D5500 rear info screen stay off unless I disable “Info display auto off”?

On my Nikon D5500, the rear LCD works normally for menus, image review, and Live View. But for the regular shooting info screen, it only comes on if I disable “Info display auto off.” Pressing the Info button or half-pressing the shutter doesn’t bring the rear display back, even though the viewfinder display works correctly. I wondered if accessories were interfering, but removing things like a tripod plate, macro rail, remote release, extension tubes, and flash didn’t help. Could this be caused by the eye/proximity sensor near the viewfinder, and is there an easy fix before considering service?

I have figured this one out. I do, of course, now feel remarkably stupid for not having figured it out earlier, however, think the blushes worth it.

The proximity sensor is here

The smallest piece of grit, dirt, finger smear or generic gunk on it or near it, on an otherwise spotless camera body, will play merry hell with the actual proximity of your face & the recognition of that fact.

So, the fix was simply to clean the sensor & the area around it.

Yes. On the D5500, this behavior can be caused by the eye/proximity sensor near the viewfinder thinking your face is still there, so it keeps the rear info display off.

If menus, playback, and Live View work normally, the LCD itself is probably fine. A very common cause is simply dirt, a fingerprint, or other grime on or around the proximity sensor. Even a small smear can confuse it.

The fix is to carefully clean the sensor area and the surrounding viewfinder housing with a soft microfiber cloth. Once the sensor is clean, the rear info display should behave normally again with “Info display auto off” enabled.

So this is likely not a major hardware failure—just a dirty proximity sensor.
