Why does the exposure indicator change when I adjust shutter speed in Manual mode on a Canon EOS 70D?

On my Canon EOS 70D in Manual mode, the exposure level/meter changes when I adjust shutter speed. I expected Manual mode to keep exposure fixed. Is something wrong, and how does this work on the 70D?

My canon eos 70d, in manual mode the shutter speed is changing when i adjust the exposure level. How to fix this?

You're looking at it backward. You're adjusting the shutter speed, and because you changed the shutter speed the exposure level indicated by the meter will change. In manual mode, the meter tells you what exposure to expect based on the shutter speed, aperture, ISO, and lighting. If you change any of those, the meter will change.

Try this: In manual mode, change the shutter speed a few times to confirm that the exposure changes. Next, without touching either of the control wheels, point the camera at something darker or lighter than what you were previously looking at. You'll see the exposure level change even though the settings are all the same.

Nothing is wrong. In Manual mode, you directly set shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. The camera’s exposure meter only shows what exposure the current settings will produce for the scene you’re pointing at.

So if you change shutter speed, the meter reading will change too, because shutter speed is part of exposure. The same would happen if you changed aperture or ISO, or even if you kept all settings the same but pointed the camera at a brighter or darker subject.

On the EOS 70D, in Manual mode you are not adjusting exposure compensation in the usual sense; you are changing the actual exposure settings, and the meter responds to that.

If you want to verify this, leave shutter speed, aperture, and ISO unchanged and point the camera at different scenes. The exposure indicator will move even though your settings stay the same.

In short: Manual mode fixes the settings, not the meter reading.
