Why does Nikon’s vertical shutter-release lock switch rotate opposite the main power switch?

On some Nikon pro bodies and battery grips, the ring around the vertical shutter-release button seems to work opposite to the main power switch. The main power switch rotates clockwise to turn the camera on, while the vertical control rotates the other way to enable the vertical shutter release. Why is it designed this way?

The vertical release lock switch matches the operation of the directional pad lock ring or lever on bodies that have them. What the lock and power switches have in common is that you turn them clockwise to engage whatever feature they provide. The power switch enables the entire camera and the vertical shutter lock switch enables the vertical shutter lock.
You'll also find that the shape of the body around the switch makes it much more difficult to accidentally push the switch into the locked position, preventing you from releasing the shutter if you need to. Having the same blob on the other side would make using the vertical shutter release awkward.

Because the vertical control is a lock switch, not a power switch. Its operation is intended to match Nikon’s other lock controls, such as directional-pad lock rings/levers: rotating it clockwise engages the feature provided by that control. For the main switch, clockwise powers the camera on; for the vertical shutter control, clockwise engages the lock, which disables the vertical release. Turning it the other way unlocks it so the vertical shutter button works.
The body shape around the switch also helps prevent accidental movement into the locked position. A raised area on one side makes it harder to knock the control into “lock” during use, while keeping the vertical shutter button comfortable to operate.
