Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 on Nikon D7100: focus clutch feels stiff after autofocus

I’m using a Tokina AT-X Pro 11-20mm f/2.8 DX on a Nikon D7100. The lens uses the Tokina push-pull focus clutch to switch between AF and MF. Sometimes after I’ve half-pressed the shutter and autofocus has engaged, I pull the focus ring back for manual focus and it feels rough or hard to turn. If I power the camera off/on or switch the camera body from AF to MF, it seems to free up again.
Is this normal behavior with the Tokina clutch mechanism, and is there a correct way to switch to manual focus without risking damage? Do these lenses sometimes need the ring to be moved or “jiggled” slightly for the clutch to engage fully?

I don't have any Tokina lenses with this mechanism, but I read that you might have to wiggle it a bit sometimes:
, you don't have to align anything as you move it forward or back. 80% of the time it works perfectly, the other 20% sometimes you have to jiggle it a little bit to get it to go all the way.

Based on the reported behavior, this sounds like the Tokina focus-clutch mechanism not fully engaging every time rather than a Nikon body fault. With these Tokina push-pull AF/MF rings, you generally shouldn’t need to align anything special, but sometimes the clutch may need a slight wiggle to seat fully.
If the ring feels stiff after switching, don’t force it. Slide the ring again and gently jiggle it until it drops fully into the MF position. Users report this works most of the time, with occasional partial engagement causing the rough feel.
So yes: a slight jiggle during the push-pull switch can be normal on this design. If manual focus remains consistently hard even when the ring is clearly in the MF position, stop forcing it and inspect the lens or have it checked.
