Why does my phone lose internet when paired to a GoPro Hero5 over Wi‑Fi?

When I pair my GoPro Hero5 with the GoPro app, my phone connects to the camera’s Wi‑Fi and then shows “no internet available.” Is that normal? Can I keep using internet on the phone while staying paired to the camera?

You need to disconnect from the Gopro. While the Gopro is the hotspot and the phone connects to it, it has no way of getting out to the internet. The phone will only be connected to the internet once you disconnect it from the Gopro.
This will apply to any camera with wifi, when you are using the camera as the hotspot. Some cameras allow you to connect via 'infrastructure mode', where they connect to an existing wifi network and communicate with the phone via that network as long as the phone is also connected to the same network.

Yes — that’s normal when the camera is acting as the Wi‑Fi hotspot. Your phone can only use one Wi‑Fi connection at a time, so when it joins the GoPro’s network, it leaves your normal internet Wi‑Fi. Since the GoPro network is only for camera control/file transfer and doesn’t provide internet access, the phone reports “no internet.”
To use internet again, disconnect the phone from the GoPro’s Wi‑Fi and reconnect to a normal network or mobile data.
This behavior is common with cameras that create their own Wi‑Fi network. Some cameras also support an “infrastructure mode,” where both the camera and phone connect through an existing Wi‑Fi network, which can allow app control without losing internet. If your setup is using the GoPro’s direct Wi‑Fi connection, though, losing internet access on that Wi‑Fi connection is expected.
