Does Canon EOS/Image Transfer Utility require internet access for local Wi‑Fi photo transfer?

I can transfer photos from my Canon camera to my computer over Wi‑Fi, but with Canon Image Transfer Utility 1.2.1.8 the connection fails if the computer has no internet access. The camera sees the computer on the local network and gets as far as showing the connected device name, then eventually reports "Connection Failed." The camera and computer are on the same LAN via a Wi‑Fi access point, so local networking appears to be working. Is internet access actually required for local Canon Wi‑Fi transfers, or is this likely a software issue?

I've tested this with my Canon 77D and EOS Utility 3.7.0 for Windows - everything works without an issue even if there isn't any Internet available. So it seems that this bug was fixed in later versions of the software.

Internet access should not be required for a local camera-to-computer Wi‑Fi transfer. Based on the reported test from another user, Canon EOS Utility 3.7.0 on Windows worked normally with no internet connection, which suggests your behavior is likely a bug or limitation in the older Image Transfer Utility 1.2.1.8 rather than a normal requirement.

So the most likely answer is:

  • local Wi‑Fi transfer should work offline
  • your older Canon utility version is the problem
  • updating to a newer Canon utility is the best workaround

If you need a reliable transfer method while traveling, USB is still a practical fallback, but your camera’s Wi‑Fi feature should not depend on live internet access just to communicate across your local network.
