Why does my Nikon DSLR show shooting data over photos during playback?

When I press the playback button to review photos, my camera shows an information screen/shooting data view over the image instead of only the photo. The overlay stays on screen until I zoom in. Is something wrong with the camera, and how can I get back to normal image-only playback?

There is nothing wrong. When seeing the playback of your images use the up and down keys to get different views with different information being displayed. Just keep pressing up or down until the camera just shows only the image.

Nothing is wrong with your camera. You’ve switched to one of the playback information views, such as shooting data or histogram.
While reviewing images, use the Up/Down buttons on the multi selector to cycle through the available playback display modes until you reach image-only view. On Nikon cameras, these modes can include image only, overview, histogram, and shooting data.
You can also choose which display screens are included in that cycle in the Playback menu under Playback display options. If you don’t want the shooting-data screen to appear, uncheck that option there.
So this is normal behavior, not a fault—just a playback display setting.
