Why does my Nikon D70 only show 9 photos when the memory card is nearly full?

I'm using a Nikon D70 with a 4 GB memory card. After taking about 100 photos, my computer only shows 9 images when I try to import them, but the card properties report about 3.5 GB used. I normally don't delete old photos. The files are not marked hidden. Where could the rest of the photos be, and how can I find them?

When you take more than 1000 photos on a D70, it changes the folder name. Most likely you have rolled over the folder name. Once that happens you will only see photos in the current folder.

Most likely the photos are still on the card, but not in the folder your camera or import software is currently showing. On the Nikon D70, once you pass a certain image count, it can create a new folder inside the card’s DCIM directory, and some software may only display the current folder.

Try opening the card directly in your operating system’s file manager (Windows Explorer/File Explorer, Mac Finder, Linux file browser), then open the DCIM folder and look through all subfolders. Your missing images are likely there, and you can copy them manually.

Another possibility is that the card contains files from another camera or other non-image files that your camera/software does not display.

After you recover anything important, it’s a good idea to format the card in the camera before using it again. Be careful: formatting erases everything on the card, so only do this after making backups.
