Why does my Canon T3i show 400 photos on the card, but my laptop only imports 31?

My Canon T3i shows more than 400 photos on the memory card, and I can review them on the camera screen. But when I connect the card to my laptop, or use a store kiosk/card reader, only 31 photos appear. What could cause this, and how can I get the rest of the images onto my computer?

Did you shoot some pics in RAW by any chance? If so they may not be recognized.

Check and see if you have any *.CR2 (I believe that this is the extension for Canon RAW files) files on your memory card folder.

A common cause is that many of the files were shot in Canon RAW format (.CR2), while the computer’s basic importer or store kiosk only shows JPEGs it recognizes.

What to check:

  • Open the memory card manually and browse to the DCIM folder.
  • Look for image files with extensions like .CR2 as well as .JPG.
  • If the files are there, copy them directly from the card to your computer.

To import and open them properly, use software that supports Canon RAW files, such as:

  • Canon EOS Utility for transfer
  • Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) for viewing/editing
  • Adobe Lightroom or another RAW-capable photo app

So the photos are likely still on the card; they just may not all be in a format your current importer understands.
