How can I access Canon RAW files on an SD card if my Nikon camera won't show them over USB?

A friend shot on a Canon and the card contains Canon RAW files. I have a Nikon D5300 and when I connect the card through the Nikon to my Windows computer, Explorer shows used space but no image files, even with hidden files enabled. Can I access those files without a separate card reader, and where should I look for them?

I'm guessing you are trying to import the Canon raw files through connecting the Nikon camera to your computer? That won't work. You need an SD card reader. (Your laptop/computer should have one?)

Probably yes, but not through the Nikon’s default USB transfer mode. Your D5300 may be using MTP/PTP, which can make the camera expose only the folders/files it expects from a Nikon, so Canon files may not appear. If your Nikon offers a USB mode like mass storage / MSC, switch to that so the camera behaves like a simple card reader.

Also check the card’s folder structure directly. Canon RAW files are usually in the DCIM folder, often something like DCIM/100CANON. Note that modern Canon RAW files are usually .CR2 rather than .CRW.

If the files still do not appear even in mass storage mode or with a proper card reader, then the card may not actually contain readable image files despite showing used space.
