Why does my Nikon D3100 say 'lens not attached' with the 18-55mm kit lens?

I’m using a Nikon D3100 with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm kit lens. When I mount the lens and turn the camera on, the camera shows a “lens not attached” message. It will only take a picture in manual mode with the self-timer. What should I check to get the camera working normally again?

You will get this message if the lens barrel is locked; push the lock/unlock button on the lens. Then extend the lens a bit, and that might take care of the problem---at least it did for me!

This usually means the camera isn’t detecting the lens electronically. First, check whether the 18-55mm lens is still in its locked/collapsed position. Press the lock/unlock button on the lens and extend the zoom slightly so it’s in the shooting position.

If that doesn’t fix it, remove the lens, clean the metal contacts on both the lens and camera mount carefully, and reattach the lens firmly.

A good next test is to try a different lens on the D3100, or try the 18-55mm on another compatible Nikon body if possible. That will tell you whether the problem is with the lens or the camera body.

If the error remains after unlocking the lens, cleaning the contacts, and testing with another lens, the faulty part likely needs service from Nikon or a repair shop.
