Why did autofocus stop working on my Nikon D5300 with the 18-55mm AF-P lens?

I use a Nikon D5300 with the Nikon 18-55mm AF-P DX VR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. The camera still takes photos, but autofocus no longer activates when I half-press the shutter. I already tried a factory reset and the problem remains. What should I check to get autofocus working again?

Nikon cautions that you need to have the latest firmware installed for it to work on the D5500, D5300 or D3300.
The problem is that the new AF-P autofocus motor system only works on camera models originally introduced since about 2013. If your camera is too old, the focus system, even in manual mode, won't work at all, making the lens completely useless with no workaround.
So it sounds like there might be a camera firmware solution for the D5300 - unless you're already using the latest version.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
Check the simple causes first: make sure the lens AF/M switch is set to A (autofocus), not M. Also check the camera’s focus settings to confirm it isn’t set to manual focus.
Because this is an AF-P lens, firmware can matter on the D5300. Nikon notes that AF-P lenses require compatible camera firmware on models like the D5300, so confirm your camera is updated to the latest firmware.
If settings and firmware look correct, remove the lens and gently clean the electrical contacts on the lens and camera mount, since dirty contacts can stop autofocus communication.
In short, the most likely things to check are:
- Lens switch set to A
- Camera focus mode not set to manual
- D5300 firmware updated for AF-P lens support
- Lens/camera contacts cleaned
If it still won’t autofocus after those steps, the lens or camera may need service.
