Why does my Canon Rebel SL1 take multiple bracketed shots on the self-timer instead of one photo?

My Canon Rebel SL1 is in Manual exposure mode, but when I press the shutter it takes several photos instead of one, and the shots have different brightness levels. The screen also says the self-timer is on, and I’ve noticed the drive mode changes to a self-timer setting. I already tried resetting camera settings, clearing custom functions, and removing the battery. What setting would cause this, and how do I get back to taking a single photo?

It takes 5 photos per single hard press of the shutter button. The resulting photos vary in brightness.

That sounds like you've got exposure bracketing enabled. However, the EOS Rebel SL1/100D Instruction Manual indicates that the Rebel SL1 only brackets for three exposures. There are other Canon advanced models that allow five and even seven exposure sets of bracketed shots.

I'd check to see what firmware version the camera indicates is installed. Is it possible the firmware for a different Canon model got installed to your SL1? If so, I'd expect all kinds of weird bugs and glitchy behavior such as you are describing.

My advice would be to update to the most current version of the EOS SL1/100D firmware downloaded directly from the Canon website for you world region.

Manual mode only controls exposure settings like shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Your problem is likely caused by two other settings:

  1. Drive mode is set to a self-timer continuous option, so one press triggers a delayed burst instead of a single shot.
  2. Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) is likely enabled, which makes each shot vary in brightness.

That combination explains the timer message and the multiple exposures with different brightness.

To return to one normal shot, set the camera’s drive mode back to Single shooting and turn AEB off. Check the drive/self-timer settings in the shooting menu or quick control screen.

One answer also notes that the SL1 manual mentions bracketing for three frames, so if you truly see five shots consistently, it may be worth checking and updating the camera firmware using the correct Canon firmware for your exact model and region.
