Why does my camera start up slowly only when the memory card is inserted?

My camera powers on normally when no memory card is inserted, but with the card installed it takes about 1–2 minutes before the screen functions and buttons start working. Once it finishes loading, everything works normally. What could cause this, and how can I fix it?

Have you tried doing a full reformat of the memory card? It sounds like it may be taking your camera that long to read files or a file directory that are on the card.

This usually points to a problem with the memory card rather than the camera itself. A slow startup can happen if the camera is struggling to read the card’s file system, directory structure, or card contacts.

Things to try:

  • Back up any photos on the card first.
  • Reformat the card fully, preferably in a computer or with a utility such as SD Formatter, then try it again in the camera.
  • Check the card’s metal contacts and clean them carefully if they look dirty.

If a full reformat fixes it, the issue was likely a corrupted or messy file structure on the card. If the problem continues after formatting, the card may be failing and should be replaced.

A quick test with another known-good memory card can confirm whether the card is the cause.
