Canon 600D won't power on, especially with SD card inserted

My Canon 600D has recently become unreliable. Sometimes when I switch it on, there is no red activity light and the camera does not start. Previously, removing the battery and memory card and waiting a while sometimes made it work again.
I have not yet tested a different battery. I was also using a microSD-to-SD adapter, and both the camera and the card adapter became very hot. The issue now seems related to whether a memory card is inserted.
What are the likely causes, and what should I check before sending the camera for service?

If I were you, I'd go ahead and buy another battery on Amazon. If a new battery fixes it, dispose of your old one, and you're good for $15. If not, it might be an internal problem and you'd probably have to send it to Canon.
Edit Per OP's comment, the problem seems to have been narrowed down to whether the memory card is inserted or not.
Try it with a new memory card. Something reliable, like a Sandisk. Again, if that doesn't fix your problem, you might have to send it to Canon for servicing. Prices can vary, so a quick phone call to Canon's customer service (1 (800) 652-2666) would be the most reliable source.

Start with the card, not the camera body. Since the problem seems tied to whether an SD card is inserted, and the microSD-to-SD adapter got very hot, the adapter or card is a likely culprit. Stop using that adapter immediately.
Try these checks:
- Test the camera with a known-good full-size SD card from a reliable brand.
- Inspect the camera’s SD slot for bent pins, debris, or a broken plastic separator interfering with contact.
- Try a different battery as well, since an aging battery can also cause intermittent startup problems.
- If the camera only fails when a card is inserted, the issue is probably card/slot related rather than general power failure.
If a new card and battery do not fix it, the camera may need service. Exact repair cost varies by fault and service center, so the only reliable way to get a price is to contact Canon or a repair shop for an estimate.
