Why does Lightroom’s Develop eyedropper switch off while I move it over the image?

In Lightroom 4’s Develop module, the eyedropper tool won’t stay active consistently. When I select it and move it over the photo, it sometimes turns off, then occasionally turns back on. Is there a way to keep the eyedropper active, or am I misunderstanding how the tool is supposed to work?

This is not normal. Are you sure you're using it correctly - ie, rather than just dragging it off the sidebar, you click it once and then the circle it was in becomes empty, and your mouse cursor changes to the dropper. Then you move it over the image and use as you wish (eg to select neutral grey for white balance etc). When you are finished take your cursor back to the circle from whence it came and click again to drop it back into there.

That behavior is not normal. In Lightroom, you should click the eyedropper once to pick it up; the tool icon area becomes empty and your cursor changes to the dropper. You can then move over the image and click where needed, such as a neutral gray area for white balance. When you’re done, return to the tool’s circle and click again to put it back.
If it’s switching off by itself, first make sure it isn’t a mouse or pointing-device issue. If your hardware seems fine, try resetting Lightroom’s preferences/settings. If that doesn’t help, reinstall Lightroom. If the problem still persists, it may be a bug and you should contact Adobe support.
