Why does DeepSkyStacker produce a stacked image with vertical bands from my RAW files?

I shot about 30 frames of the Orion Nebula using a Canon EOS 6D on an iOptron SkyTracker with a 70-200mm lens at 200mm, f/4, 6-second exposures. The individual RAW files look normal and are well aligned, but when I stack them in DeepSkyStacker using the recommended/default settings, the output is just a glitched image made of vertical bars. I did not use darks or flats for this test. DeepSkyStacker appears to read and register the files correctly. What could cause this, and how can I fix it?

I've had similar problems with DSS with the RAW files from my camera. Even though the images are previewed correctly in DSS, stacking didn't work.
The solution in my case was to convert the RAW files to DNG with the Adobe DNG converter, also using the newest version of Deep Sky Stacker wich is (afaik) 4.1.1

This is likely a DeepSkyStacker RAW decoding/compatibility issue rather than a tracking or alignment problem. Since your individual frames look normal and DSS can preview/register them, but the final stack turns into vertical bands, the most practical fix reported by users is to convert the camera RAW files to DNG first, then stack the DNGs instead. Also make sure you are using the newest available version of DeepSkyStacker.
Before stacking, it’s also worth reviewing all frames in a RAW preview app and removing any bad exposures—frames with trailed or distorted stars, clouds, satellites, or aircraft can cause stacking problems or poor results.
So the recommended workflow is:
- Review and cull bad frames.
- Convert the remaining RAWs to DNG.
- Update DSS to the latest version.
- Stack again.
Lack of darks/flats would reduce image quality, but it would not normally create a vertical-bar glitch like this.
