Why do my Nikon D3300 .NEF RAW files open in black and white in UFRaw, while the JPEGs are in color?

I shot RAW+JPEG on a Nikon D3300. The JPEGs look normal and in-camera RAW processing also shows the images in color, but when I open the .NEF files in UFRaw for editing with GIMP, they appear in black and white. Why would only the RAW files open this way, and how can I fix it?

Raw editors usually ignore the in-camera settings for things such as color and contrast. Instead they apply the user selected profile from the application you use to open the raw file and convert the raw data to a viewable image on your screen. It sounds like you (or someone else) have selected a B&W profile to be the default way your application opens raw files. You need to change that default profile to one that renders your images in color.

This is usually a software setting, not a problem with the RAW files. RAW editors often ignore many in-camera picture settings and instead use their own default conversion profile. If UFRaw is opening every file in black and white, it likely has a grayscale or desaturated default enabled.
Things to check in UFRaw:
- In the Grayscale tab, make sure Grayscale mode is set to None.
- In the Corrections tab, check that Saturation is not set to 0; around 1.00 is normal.
- If needed, reset UFRaw’s preferences by quitting the program and removing its
.ufrawrcsettings file from your home directory.
