Why do my Canon SELPHY CP1300 prints look dull, and how can I make them brighter?

My photos look bright on screen, but when I print them on a Canon SELPHY CP1300 they come out duller. I’ve installed the cartridge and paper correctly, so I’m trying to understand whether this is normal for printing or if there are settings I should change on the printer or in software to improve the results.

All the other answers are too general. Specifically for this printer (I have the CP1200, pretty much the same):
- Print from an SD card plugged into the printer (the below settings don't seem to change on wifi, at least for me)
- Go into the menu options, and:
- Turn Image Optimize to Off
- Brightness set to +1
- My Colors set to Vivid
Then they come out significantly better than default.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
Some difference is normal: screens emit light, while prints only reflect light, so prints usually look less bright than your display. Also, consumer photo printers can’t reproduce every screen color exactly.
For the SELPHY CP1300/CP1200 series, one community-tested setup that improves results is:
- print from an SD card inserted in the printer
- set Image Optimize to Off
- set Brightness to +1
- set My Colors to Vivid
If you’re printing by Wi-Fi, those settings may not affect the print in the same way.
For best control, adjust the image before printing in photo software and let the software manage color. That gives you more control over brightness and color than relying on the printer alone.
So: the printer may not be faulty. First try the SELPHY settings above, and if prints still look dull, prepare the image specifically for print rather than expecting it to match a bright monitor exactly.
