Why are there CR2 files on my Fujifilm X-T2 card, and how do I set the image format correctly?

I’m new to photography and using a Fujifilm X-T2. I noticed different file types on my memory card, including .RAF and .CR2, and I’m confused about what they mean. Can the X-T2 create both types, or is something else going on? How do I choose whether the camera saves RAW or JPEG, and how can I avoid this confusion in the future?

Every major camera manufacturer has their own proprietary raw image format (and some have more than one). CR2 is one of Canon's, and RAF is one of Fujifilm's. What you have is a memory card that spent some time in a Canon body, and was not cleaned off before you moved it to your new Fujifilm.

The Fujifilm X-T2 does not create .CR2 files. On the X-T2, the main image formats are .RAF (Fujifilm RAW) and .JPG (JPEG). .CR2 is Canon’s RAW format, so if you see CR2 files on the card, they were almost certainly made in a Canon camera earlier.
Your camera isn’t randomly switching formats on its own—you choose the recording format in the camera settings. On the X-T2, use the menu or press the Q button, go to Image Quality, and select the file type you want:
- RAW = .RAF
- Fine / Normal = .JPG
- RAW + Fine or RAW + Normal = both RAW and JPEG
To avoid confusion, use a memory card that has been emptied or formatted in the camera before shooting with it. That way, the card only contains files from your current camera and session.
