Why are Interval Timer Shooting, Time-Lapse Movie, and Focus Shift grayed out on a Nikon Z6?

On my Nikon Z6, the Interval Timer Shooting menu is grayed out with the message: “This option is not available at current settings or in the camera’s current state.” The same thing happens with Time-Lapse Movie and Focus Shift Shooting. I’ve tried different image settings, focus modes, and release modes, but those options still won’t become available. What settings or camera conditions can cause this, and what should I check first?

Turns out you have to set the cameras time zone and time.

On the Nikon Z6, these features can be unavailable if the camera’s date/time setup is incomplete or if there’s no properly inserted memory card.

Based on the reports here, the first things to check are:

  • Set the camera’s time zone and date/time correctly.
  • Make sure your XQD memory card is inserted fully and recognized by the camera.

Interval timer and time-lapse functions depend on the camera clock, so if time/date isn’t set, they may stay disabled. Time-lapse movie also needs a usable memory card in the camera.

If those options are grayed out, start by:

  1. Opening the setup menu and confirming time zone, date, and time are set.
  2. Powering off the camera, removing and reinserting the memory card, then confirming the card is detected.
  3. Trying the menu again after restarting the camera.

If the card isn’t recognized or the clock hasn’t been set, these shooting modes may remain unavailable even if other settings seem correct.
