How do I switch a Nikon D750 to AF-C autofocus mode?

I recently bought a used Nikon D750 and I'm learning the controls. When I try to change the autofocus mode to AF-C, the camera shows the message: "This option is not available at current settings or in the camera's current state." I've tried both the Custom Settings menu and pressing the AF button while turning the command dial, but it only lets me switch between AF-A and AF-S. What setting do I need to change to enable AF-C?

To use autofocus, rotate the focus-mode selector to AF. Autofocus mode can be selected by pressing the AF mode button and rotating the main command dial until the desired setting is displayed in the viewfinder or control panel.

Procedure Press the i button. Highlight the current focus mode in the information display with the multi selector and press OK. Highlight AF-C and press OK.

Make sure the lens/camera focus-mode selector is set to AF first. On the D750, AF-C is only available when autofocus is enabled.

Try this:

  1. Set the focus-mode selector to AF.
  2. Press the AF-mode button and rotate the main command dial until AF-C appears in the viewfinder or top panel.

You can also set it through the menu:

  1. Press the i button.
  2. Highlight the current focus mode in the information display and press OK.
  3. Select AF-C and press OK.

If the camera only offers AF-A and AF-S, it usually means the camera is not currently in a state where continuous autofocus can be selected, most commonly because autofocus itself is not enabled.
