How can I quickly change white balance on a Nikon D5600 in Aperture Priority mode?

I used to change white balance on my Nikon D50 by pressing the WB button and turning the command dial. On a Nikon D5600, I need to switch white balance quickly while shooting in Aperture Priority because Auto WB isn’t giving the result I want. Is there a fast way to do this without digging through menus each time?

Not precisely what you asked, but one of the main reasons to shoot RAW is that you can change white balance in post at will. From RAW you can make any equivalent change that a preset used shooting JPEG would.

What this does mean is that you move the issue of selecting white balance to post processing. At that point you have the widest possible latitude for WB choice.

This also frees you from worrying about white balance when shooting. You can still use Auto WB to get a JPEG (RAW+JPEG) and use the RAW to work from when AutoWB lets you down.

Yes. On the D5600, the quickest built-in way is usually the i button on the back, which lets you access and change white balance without going deep into the menus.

For even faster access, you can assign white balance to the Fn button. On the D5600 this is set in Menu > Custom Settings > f1 > Assign Fn button. Once assigned, you can use the Fn button to adjust WB while shooting, which is the closest match to the quick access you had on the D50.

Also, if you shoot RAW, white balance can be changed later in post-processing with much more flexibility, so you don’t have to worry as much about getting the WB preset exactly right in-camera. That’s especially useful when Auto WB is inconsistent.
