Why does my Nikon D7200 show f/0 and not let me change the aperture?

My Nikon D7200 sometimes shows f/0 (sometimes with a small triangle) and I can’t change the aperture with the command dial. I’m using a Nikon 28-105mm lens. I also tried holding the exposure compensation button and turning the dial, but that only changes exposure compensation. Is this a lens problem or a camera body problem?

F0 with a triangle next to it is a Nikon error code for no lens communication.

Try cleaning the contacts and remounting the lens. If neither works, try another lens. If that doesn't work the camera probably needs repair. If a different lens does work, then the 28-105 needs repair.

On a Nikon body, f/0 usually means the camera is not communicating properly with the lens. The most likely causes are:

  • dirty or poor lens-to-body contacts
  • the lens not being mounted correctly
  • a fault with the lens or camera body
  • on older Nikon lenses with an aperture ring, the ring is not set to its minimum aperture (usually the highest number, such as f/22)

What to try:

  1. Remove and remount the lens.
  2. Clean the electrical contacts on the lens and camera carefully.
  3. If your 28-105mm has an aperture ring, set it to the highest f-number and lock it there if possible.
  4. Try a different lens on the D7200.

If another lens works normally, the 28-105mm likely needs service. If no lenses work, the camera body may need repair. Also, the +/- button is for exposure compensation, not for changing aperture directly.
