Where should I place a watermark so it’s visible without distracting from the photo?

I’m exporting photos from Lightroom and want to add a watermark, but different positions either cover part of the image or become hard to notice. What should I consider when choosing watermark placement so it identifies the image without spoiling the composition?

Most people use watermarks to prevent the photo from being used by other people without consent. The best way to do it is to have it on the actual subject itself, but at a very low opacity. Once the photographer decides to sell/give the photograph away, he can always share the hi-res image without the watermark.
Having said that, it you want to have a watermark just to identify your images, then you can place it in a corner and reduce the opacity to about 10-15% so that it does not distract you from the image (example). Another thing you can do is to have a frame around the image and put your watermark there (example).

It depends on the watermark’s purpose.
If your main goal is deterrence against unauthorized use, a watermark usually needs to overlap the main subject or important image area; otherwise it can often be cropped out. Keep it subtle with low opacity so it doesn’t dominate the photo.
If the goal is simply identification or branding, place it where it draws the least attention—typically in a corner, often opposite the main subject. Lowering opacity to around 10–15% helps keep it from distracting from the image.
Another clean option is to add a border/frame and place the watermark there instead of on the picture itself.
In general, avoid placing the watermark where it becomes the first thing the viewer notices. Aim for visible but unobtrusive, and choose placement based on whether you want protection, branding, or both.
