I want to use photos I took of my clients on my website and in promotional/marketing materials. I do not plan to sell the photos themselves. What kind of release form should I be looking for, and where can I find a good template?

Check these links, I have found them all useful in the past.

(If you have a Getty account then you can just download theirs. The same may well go for other stock agencies.)

Edit: also check out this iPhone app, it looks excellent and the releases generated are accepted by Getty and Alamy: https://www.facebook.com/pages/VMRelease/105679776169458

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.

You’re generally looking for a model release (or client/photo release) that grants permission to use a person’s likeness for marketing, portfolio, website, and other promotional use. Even if you’re not selling the photos themselves, using them in advertising or self-promotion typically still calls for a release.

Useful places to start, based on the community suggestions:

  • ASMP forms and tutorials
  • Wedding photography model release templates/articles
  • Acclaim Images release resources
  • CAPIC templates if you’re in Canada
  • Some stock agencies, such as Getty, may also provide release forms for contributors

If you want mobile workflow, there are also release-form apps mentioned by the community.

Because releases can vary by country/state and intended use, it’s smart to choose a template relevant to your location and have a lawyer review it if you’ll rely on it for business marketing.
