Where can I find a sample commercial photo release or licensing form for a business client?

I photographed a business portrait session and the client wants to use the images on their website and in company profiles. My current print release is written for personal portraits and says the photos cannot be used for commercial purposes. What type of document should I provide for this kind of business use, and where can I find a sample commercial photo release or licensing form?

The American Society of Media Photographers not only has a very useful tutorial on this subject, but they also have, as you requested, sample forms, available here -- and unlike other pro orgs that lock their samples behind a login, these are freely available.

For business use like websites and company profiles, you likely need a commercial usage/license agreement rather than a simple personal print release. A personal print release usually only covers making prints for private use, while commercial use should be explicitly authorized in writing.

Community recommendations included:

  • ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers), which offers tutorials and sample forms.
  • Easy Release, a mobile app that can generate release forms.
  • e-model.net, which was suggested as a sample release source.

Also make sure you distinguish between:

  • a copyright/license granted by you to the client for specific uses, and
  • a model release, if recognizable people appear and the images will be used commercially.

If the portraits are for a company’s promotional use, the safest approach is a written license describing the allowed uses clearly.
