When should I use a Dutch angle, and how much should I tilt the camera?

I’m a beginner and sometimes see photos where the camera is intentionally tilted so the horizon isn’t level (Dutch angle / canted angle / oblique angle). When does this work well, and are there any basic guidelines for how much tilt to use?

I really love to shot with diagonal angle/lines. Hope this help you and let me know if not.

A Dutch angle is best used deliberately, not just to “add interest.” It can make an image feel more active, lively, or less posed, and it often works well when the subject itself forms strong diagonals across the frame.
Good uses include:
- emphasizing motion or energy
- filling the frame with the subject from corner to corner
- drawing attention to the subject more than the surrounding environment
- scenes like dancing or dynamic architecture where diagonal lines feel natural
A useful guideline is to look at how the subject sits in the frame. If tilting helps the subject run diagonally and balances detail across the image, it can be effective. For example, with a tall building, a tilt can shift attention from the skyline relationship to the building itself.
As for how much tilt: there’s no fixed rule. Use enough to make the diagonal feel intentional and aesthetically pleasing. If the tilt is so slight that it looks accidental, it usually won’t work as well.
In short: use a Dutch angle when it supports the subject’s energy or composition, especially with strong diagonal lines, and make the tilt intentional rather than subtle by mistake.
