What’s the Nikon equivalent to Canon’s EF 24-105mm f/4L IS on full frame?

I’m comparing full-frame Canon and Nikon bodies and like the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS as a general-purpose zoom. If I choose Nikon instead, which lens is the closest equivalent in range and purpose for a full-frame body like the D610?

There are close lenses but part of choosing between brands is selecting the lens lineup. Nikon has a top quality 24-70mm F/2.8, similar to Canon's 24-70mm F/2.8 but for something longer, they offer the 24-120mm F/4G VR. It gives you the benefit of image-stabilization and a slightly longer reach while it does compromise on image-quality.

Another great alternative is the Sigma A 24-105mm F/4 DG OS HSM which is reputed to be excellent. It also offers stabilization but not weather-proofing as with Canon and Nikon's offerings.

The closest Nikon equivalent is the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR. It fills the same role as a full-frame, constant-f/4 walkaround zoom with stabilization, and even gives a bit more reach. In Nikon terms, VR is the equivalent of Canon’s IS.

A few caveats from the community: the 24-120mm f/4 is generally seen as a practical all-purpose lens, but like the Canon 24-105mm f/4L, it’s a compromise design rather than a perfect optical standout. If you want higher image quality and don’t need the extra reach, Nikon’s 24-70mm f/2.8 is a stronger premium standard zoom, but it’s a different class of lens.

If you’re open to third-party options, the Sigma 24-105mm f/4 DG OS HSM was also mentioned as a strong alternative with stabilization.

So, if you want the Nikon lens that most closely matches the Canon 24-105L in concept and usage, the answer is: Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR.
