What’s a practical way to carry multiple lenses and filters day to day or when traveling?

My current Tamrac backpack no longer has enough room for my lenses and filters. I’d like a practical way to carry camera gear depending on the situation—everyday shooting, walking around, and travel—without making access too awkward. How do you organize and carry multiple lenses, and what type of bag works best for different needs?

I currently have three lenses for my Canon EOS. Most of the time I use a soft-sided bag with two of the lenses in the bag vertically, and one on the camera body. I do have an aluminum briefcase style case that I use when I travel, or think that they may get banged around a bit.

There isn’t one best bag for every situation—most photographers use different bags depending on how much gear they need.
From the answers, a common approach is:
- carry only the lenses you actually need for the day
- keep one lens mounted on the camera
- store extra lenses vertically in padded compartments
- use a smaller bag for walkaround shooting and a larger bag for travel or heavier kits
For everyday use, a sling or backpack-style camera bag works well, especially one with quick side access so you don’t have to put it on the ground to grab the camera. For travel, a larger padded case or carry-on-friendly backpack can protect more gear, but it will be heavier. Some photographers also keep a hard or aluminum case for situations where equipment might get knocked around.
If your current backpack is full, the simplest upgrade is either a larger modular camera backpack or adding a second smaller bag for lighter outings instead of trying to carry everything at once.
