I have a Canon DSLR from around 2005 and need to replace a lost tripod. Are camera tripod mounts metric or imperial, and what thread size should I look for to make sure the tripod fits?

All Canon DSLR's (in fact, probably all DSLR's and mirrorless cameras from any brand for decades till today) use a standard 1/4" 20 pitch thread. In other words, any decent tripod will do the job.

You will find that any tripod, whether $20 or $500 will fit your camera.

Your Canon DSLR almost certainly uses the standard 1/4-20 UNC tripod socket, which is the normal camera mount used on most consumer DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. In practice, that means almost any standard tripod will fit.

A larger 3/8-16 thread also exists, but that’s more commonly used on heavier professional cameras, lenses, or tripod heads—not typical camera bodies like yours.

If a tripod uses a quick-release plate, the plate still usually attaches to the camera with the same 1/4-20 screw. The main compatibility issue with quick-release systems is between plates and heads, not between the tripod and your camera.

So the simple answer: look for a standard tripod with a 1/4-20 mounting screw, and it should work fine with your Canon DSLR.
