I’d like to take better panoramic photos with my iPhone, possibly using apps like Photosynth. What tripod or tripod mount would work well for this? I’m open to compact options as well as using a regular tripod if I can attach the phone securely.

Check out the GorillaMobile. It is very small and light and its flexible legs let you attach it to various objects such as poles, street signs, tree branched, bicycle handles, etc.
EDIT:
Gary Fong now makes a tripod adapter for the iPhone, meaning you can use your iPhone on any tripod. Plus, the iPhone is so light compared to a camera that any well-constructed tripod will have no problem holding the phone.

For iPhone panoramas, the key is usually the phone mount rather than needing a special tripod. Since an iPhone is very light, almost any stable tripod can support it if you add a compatible phone adapter.
Options mentioned by the community include:
- a compact flexible mini tripod like the GorillaMobile, which is portable and can wrap onto objects
- an iPhone tripod adapter from Gary Fong, which lets you mount the phone on a standard tripod
- the Glif, a simple iPhone tripod mount/stand
- a Nodal Ninja, which is more specialized for panoramic shooting but may need adaptation for an iPhone and is likely overkill for casual use
If your goal is better-looking panoramas, a standard tripod plus a secure iPhone mount is the most practical setup. A small flexible tripod is convenient for travel, but a regular tripod will usually give the best stability and alignment.
