Is there an iPhone app for sweep-style panoramas like Sony compact cameras?

I enjoy shooting panoramas on my iPhone and currently use Autostitch Panorama. I'm looking for a sweep-style panorama app similar to the feature found on some Sony compact cameras, where you pan the phone and it builds the panorama as you move. Are there any iPhone apps that do this, or is it built into iOS?

This feature is now built in to the new iPhone 5, and is also available on the iPhone 4S (if you have updated to iOS6).

The same feature is also built into Android devices with the (little known) panoramic feature.

Camera > Settings > Shooting Mode > Panorama

Yes. If your iPhone supports iOS 6-era panorama features (notably iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S after updating), Apple added a built-in Panorama mode in the Camera app.

If you want third-party options, community members recommended:

  • 360 Panorama
  • Photosynth

These apps let you sweep/pan the phone while viewing the screen, then stitch the captured scene into a panorama.

A few tips for best results:

  • Pan slowly and steadily.
  • Keep the phone level while sweeping.
  • Avoid very fast movement or subjects moving through the frame, which can cause stitching errors.

So if your phone has the built-in Panorama mode, that’s the simplest option; otherwise, a dedicated panorama app like 360 Panorama or Photosynth should provide the sweep-style shooting you want.
