What memory card speed and type should I use in a Canon PowerShot S95?

I’m choosing a memory card for a Canon PowerShot S95, which supports SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC, MMCplus, and HC MMCplus. My main goal is to reduce write delays between shots.

Which card type and speed rating is the best choice for this camera? Also, which option is the safest bet for compatibility with common card readers, and is there any reason to consider MMC over SD-family cards?

Plain SD cards top out at 2GB; SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) gets you between 4GB and 16GB; SDXC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity) gets you from 32GB to 2TB. In practical terms, you're going to be using SDHC cards most of the time -- under 4GB is kind of limiting, forcing you to carry a spare or two, and anything more than 16GB is too expensive to be practical unless you're dealing with a very-high-resolution camera and recording raw data.

The speed of the card is a separate deal. It's not directly related to the capacity.

As for MMC (MultiMedia Card), it's an obsolete format. The SD family shares the same physical layout and electrical contacts, so most SD card devices can also use MMC if you have old cards lying around.

For the S95, the best practical choice is an SD-family card, not MMC. MMC is essentially obsolete, while SD/SDHC/SDXC are the standard formats and are much more likely to work in normal card readers.

Capacity and speed are separate things:

  • SD: up to 2GB
  • SDHC: 4GB to 16GB
  • SDXC: 32GB and up

To improve write performance, look at the card’s speed class rather than just the format. A Class 6 or Class 10 SD/SDHC card is the sensible recommendation from the community answers.

For this camera, SDHC is the most practical option for typical use: plain SD is quite small, and larger-capacity cards are not necessarily faster just because they hold more.

So the safest, simplest bet is:

  • SDHC card
  • Class 6 or Class 10
  • Use SD-family cards rather than MMC

That gives you good compatibility with standard readers and solid performance for a compact camera like the S95.
