I’m using a Nikon D40x and want to know whether it supports SDHC memory cards, specifically Class 6 and Class 10 cards. Is there a supported card type list for this camera, and do the speed classes matter for still photography?

According to DPreview it supports SD and SDHC cards. This includes all the classes of these cards.
The classes only differ from each other regarding write speeds. Here is more information on that.
As the D40x can not record video, a class 10 card is not necessary. A lower speed card is sufficient to take pictures.

Yes. The Nikon D40x supports SD and SDHC cards, so SDHC cards labeled Class 6 or Class 10 should work.
The “class” rating refers to minimum write speed, not a different card format. In other words, Class 6 and Class 10 are still SDHC cards; they just offer faster write performance.
For the D40x, card speed usually isn’t critical because it’s a stills camera and does not record video. A slower card is generally sufficient for taking photos, though a faster card may help a bit with write times in some situations.
