I want to connect an Olympus E-PM2 directly to a calibrated external monitor and need to know the camera’s HDMI output format. What maximum resolution and refresh/interlace rate does it output over HDMI? If relevant, do similar Olympus mirrorless models use the same Full HD output behavior?

Well I did get a micro-HDMI adapter, and the monitor reports "HDMI digital 1080/50i".
That would be a resolution of 1920x1080.
4/3 photos will be using 1440×1080 pixels with areas of black from both sides. Wide aspect videos or photos should be using the full width.

Generated from our catalog & community — verify before relying on it.
Based on the community reports, the Olympus E-PM2 outputs HDMI at 1920×1080 (Full HD), using an interlaced signal: typically 50i in Europe and 60 fields per second in North America.
One user tested it directly and their monitor identified the signal as “1080/50i.” For 4:3 still images, the camera’s HDMI display will not fill the full 16:9 frame, so the image area is effectively about 1440×1080 with black bars at the sides. Widescreen video or images can use the full 1920-pixel width.
So if you connect the camera straight to an external monitor, expect Full HD output rather than the camera’s full still-photo resolution.
