Why won’t my Nikon D3200 show Live View over HDMI on an external monitor?

I connected my Nikon D3200’s mini-HDMI port to an LG TV and a Dell U2415 monitor using a mini-HDMI to HDMI adapter, but neither display shows anything in Live View. The camera’s HDMI resolution is set to Auto, remote control is Off, and I also tried resetting the camera. I expected the rear LCD image to mirror to the external display. Does the D3200 support Live View output over HDMI, or is this only for playback? How can I tell whether the issue is a setting, the adapter, or a camera fault?

Nothing is malfunctioning. The Nikon D3x00 series of cameras is not capable of outputting what you desire. The HDMI port seems to be there only to allow reviewing still images and videos after they are created.

Most likely nothing is wrong with your camera or settings. On the Nikon D3200/D3x00 series, the HDMI port is generally for playback of photos and recorded video, not for sending a Live View feed to an external monitor.
So if you connect it to a TV or monitor and expect the rear screen to mirror Live View, that usually won’t work on this model. A factory reset would not change that.
To narrow it down, try playing back an existing photo or video from the camera while connected by HDMI. If playback appears on the external display, then the adapter/cable and HDMI port are probably fine, and the limitation is simply that the D3200 does not output Live View the way you want.
If your goal is to view the camera feed on a computer, you would typically need a separate HDMI capture device on the computer side—but that still depends on the camera providing a usable HDMI signal.
