I can connect my Canon PowerShot SX240 HS to a TV with a mini HDMI to HDMI cable and playback photos and videos already on the camera. What I want is to see the live camera view on the TV while framing a shot or recording video. Is live view output supported on this model, and does it work over HDMI or only with the A/V cable?

Page 200 of the SX240HS/SX260HS manual, under the section "Playback on a Standard-Definition TV" states,

When the camera and TV are connected, you can also shoot while previewing shots on the larger screen of the TV. To shoot, follow the same steps as when using the camera screen.

It is not clear from the manual if that capability exists only when connected via A/V cable to standard-def TVs and not when connected via HDMI cable to HDTV.

If you have the A/V cable to connect to a standard-def TV, I would suggest try that route and verify the live-preview capability stated in the manual.

According to the SX240 HS / SX260 HS manual, the camera can be used to shoot while previewing on a TV, but that statement appears in the section for playback on a standard-definition TV using the A/V connection. From the information provided, it is not clear that the same live-view output is supported over HDMI.

Since your HDMI connection only shows playback, the most likely conclusion is that this model may not provide live view over HDMI, or it may only do so in specific modes not documented clearly. The practical next step is to try the Canon A/V cable with a standard-definition TV or compatible input and test whether live preview works there, as described in the manual.

So: playback over HDMI is confirmed, but live view over HDMI is uncertain; the manual specifically suggests live preview on a TV via the standard A/V route.
