I’ve lost the install discs that came with my Canon 500D. Is there any good free software for opening and editing Canon RAW files, and are there better options than Canon’s bundled software?

Raw Therapee is an excellent piece of software and it's free.

Yes. Based on the community replies, RawTherapee is the strongest free recommendation for editing Canon RAW files. It’s free, open source, actively developed, and offers multiple demosaicing options, including the well-regarded AMaZE algorithm for RAW conversion.

Another free option mentioned is Darktable, which was described as promising and already offering useful functionality.

In general, many RAW editors rely on similar underlying RAW-reading technology, so differences often come from processing tools and demosaicing quality rather than basic file support. If you want a solid free starting point for Canon 500D RAW files, RawTherapee is the clearest recommendation from the answers.
