What free alternatives to Lightroom offer RAW editing and cataloging?

I’m looking for free software similar to Lightroom that can cover most of these needs:
- RAW photo editing
- library/photo management
- support for multiple catalogs
- strong keyword/tagging features
Are there any good free options, either as an all-in-one app or as a combination of separate tools?

RawTherapee is a decent open source alternative to Lightroom.

Yes. The main free Lightroom alternatives mentioned are Darktable and RawTherapee.
- Darktable is the closest match if you want a Lightroom-style workflow, with RAW editing and photo management in one application.
- RawTherapee is a strong free RAW editor, but it’s more focused on image processing than full library/catalog management.
A useful way to think about this is that there are two approaches:
- All-in-one software: one app handles both editing and cataloging.
- Separate tools: use one program for RAW editing and another for organizing, tagging, and cataloging.
If your priority is keeping everything in one package, Darktable is likely the best free option to try first. If you care most about RAW conversion quality, RawTherapee is also worth testing, possibly alongside a separate asset manager.
Since feature support can vary by operating system and workflow, it’s best to try both approaches and see which fits your needs better.
